Cosmo-Cube is another in the constantly increasing nerd/ gamer/ geek variety of subscription box. This month's theme for Cosmo-Cube is SteamPunk and I have to admit, I was SUPER excited. I love all things Steampunk. For those of you new to geekdom, Steampunk refers to a genre of science fiction and fantasy that incorporates technology and copper/bronze designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. The genre is huge in books (my favorite being Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices) and not uncommon in TV and film. Its also a really popular cosplay and Halloween look.
Cosmo-Cube sends a "cube" of carefully selected pieces and will always include a T-Shirt and Poster from the winners of the ArtWork Contest. You will also have a shot to win the Cosmic Cube pick of the month. Below is this month's Steampunk Cube.
Right off the bat I was excited to see my first FunkoPop!!! The Pop was Chandra Nalaar from Magic the Gathering. I have never been into Magic, but I LOVE her full SteamPunk garb. Chandra is currently on sale on amazon for ($6.49)
The box also included two GREAT steampunk pieces that I really liked and will definitely go into my costume rotation. The first was Leegoal New Sell Vintage Steampunk Goggles Glasses Welding Cyber Punk Gothic (Copper) ($4.33 amazon). The goggles were cute. Sadly, mine broke in the middle of filming the unboxing video below, (check it out live). The Pocket Watch/Locket ($3) was also very SteamPunk and even working.
Also included and pictured above (and in below movie) was the Atlantis Glow in Dark Locket Luminous Statement Hollow Heart Locket ($1.33). I am not sure why this was included it was sorta cheap and didn't really go with the theme. Below is an up close shot of this month's t-shirt. I was super confused by it. It was advertised as "Steampunk Patch Guardian Elite," ($12?) but correct me if I am wrong, that's Megaman, right? Why is MegaMan Steampunk?
The final item is fan Artwork of IronMan. The printing wasn't the best quality and mine was super ripped up. Also, not sure how IronMan fits with Steampunk, other than he is outfitted with some additional "Steampunky" metals.
Month to Month Cosmo-Cube is $24.95, 3 Month Prepay $71.95, 6 Month Prepay $139.95. This month's calucations add up to $27.00. They offer APO/ DPO shipping. To be honest, this box has potential but was sorta all over the place. If you are moving from post to post, this could be fun to get a nice taste of home, as with all the other nerd/geek boxes. However, I would have liked to see more bigger ticket items like comics or quality pieces.
Overall out of 10, I give July's Cosmo-Cube a 6 on quality, 7 on cost, 7 on appropriate for me and 8 on fun.
