I was super excited when I heard about the myth and legends themes for this month's Owlcrate.
Starting off with the most important item in the box, the book. I was super wowed Owlcrate included the recently released Soundless by Richelle Mead ($14.95 and 3.7 stars on Amazon and 3.5 pm Goodreads)
From Richelle Mead, the bestselling author of Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, comes a new fantasy. "For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.
When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zipline shrink and many go hungry. Fei’s home, the people she loves, and her entire existence is plunged into crisis, under threat of darkness and starvation. But soon Fei is awoken in the night by a searing noise, and sound becomes her weapon." The premise sounds super cool, though the reviews on Amazon are less than stellar.
The first (non-book) item in the box was Sleeping Beauty Caffeine Free Tea ($9). The teas is described as "an herbal tea blend to wake Sleeping Beauty from an ageless sleep. Magically created by the good fairies Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Blended with honeybush tea, apple pieces, chamomile flowers, rose hips, natural peach flavor, rose flavor, natural creme flavor, rose petals & marigold flowers." The Adagio company that makes these has a rating system on its site and this box has a 96 out of 100 and included was this great review:
“I bought the Sleeping Beauty tin. Rose is usually not one of my favorite flavors, but this was a subtle, creamy, and sweet rose rather than hostile, overbearingly floral rose that some teas end up adopting in a palette. Bonus for being caffeine-free! ”
The next item was a super simple pocket mirror from My Clockwork Castle ($4.50), The link to the theme is that these are meant to be mermaid scales. This one is kinda a stretch and a bit of a throw away item. Its a cute little mirror but..meh.
The heavily teased item in this box was the partnership with Geeky Cauldron known for their great fandom pieces of jewelry. This nondescript castle locket ($12) is heavy and not really something I actually see myself wearing. I also am disappointed that it doesn't seem to tie in directly with any fandoms.
The final item was another throw away piece. It's a plastic Camp Half Blood (Percy Jackson) bracelet ($2). This is another item that will just go in a drawer sadly. One of the larger perks though, were the coupons included for some of those fun fandom stores which I have shown below.
OwlCrate is $29.99 plus shipping ($6.99 to US and $10.59 to Canada) and offers APO Shipping. We were unable to find out if they offer a military discount, but will follow up.
Overall out of 10 I give this month's OwlCrate a 6 on quality (only because the book), a 6 on cost (priced at $42.45), 5 on appropriate for me and a 7 on fun!
